2014 Goals

Okay, I know I’m a little late on this one (it’s almost February… oops!) but can you believe it’s already 2014? In some ways it feels like 2013 flew by, but when I look back on all the amazing things we did (Erin and Deanna mentioned most of the epic adventures in their posts) it makes 2013 feel like two years in one! I did my first half marathon, first 15k, first marathon and first mud run (crazy, I know). I really loved every race we did, but the Half Moon Bay International Marathon was probably my favorite.  It was beautiful, took lots of preparation, and felt like a major accomplishment. Actually, maybe it was Ragnar. So many fun things that I can’t decide. After a year like that, what could I possibly plan for this year that could top it?

What’s in store for this year?

Well, it turns out there is something MAJOR happening this year that will keep me on my toes – I’m going to have a baby! 🙂 Yes, you heard that correctly. Mini me, coming July 2014. So, with that in mind, my goals will be significantly different from last year. No marathons for me (or even half marathons) – this year will be all about balance, maintenance, and doing what feels right and good.

To be perfectly honest, it’s been a little weird to not be pushing myself as hard physically. It’s almost harder for me to get myself to just relax instead of worrying about not working out (I’m pretty good at the eating part though!). Instead, I’ve just been trying to get exercise that isn’t too strenuous and wards off the more unpleasant side effects of pregnancy (although I’ve been pretty lucky!) Here are some specific things I’d like to do in 2014:

More Yoga

Not only is yoga great for every athlete (even runners), but is great at forcing you to live in the moment. Yoga is a great way to stay flexible and stretch muscles that can get tight during running, weight lifting or other types of cross training. Erin and I have been doing a lot of power yoga lately, and I would love to keep it up this year (not to mention that it’s great for pregnant ladies, too!)

Save Money

I’m with Deanna on this one, for obvious reasons. Diapers aren’t cheap! For me, this means changing my fitness routine a bit. Although I absolutely love Body Pump, I’ve decided to trade my gym membership for more outdoor exercising (which is pretty easy to do since we live in sunny SoCal… what’s snow?) I’ll also take advantage of discount codes for races (as long as I can still do them) and do more home weight training.

Balance and Planning

2014 is going to be BUSY. 2013 was all about pushing myself, training hard, and traveling to races almost every weekend. I loved every moment of it. This year is going to take a little more planning and balance – balance with baby preparation, exercise, eating right, dedicating time to Do Epic Runs, spending time with friends and family, etc. It’s going to take sacrificing some things and some creative scheduling.
