Running is a serious business. You have to plan out your training so that you have enough time to fit it in. You have to eat properly to make sure your body has enough fuel for your long runs. You have to train correctly so that you don’t get injured. You have to understand the dynamics of running to improve your distance and time. And so on and so forth.
But running is also supposed to be FUN. For all the seriousness that goes into training, its also just as important to remember that you should be enjoying yourself. If it’s not fun, what’s the point? If you find yourself having to drag yourself to every one of your runs, it’s time to switch something up.
Here’s our Top 5 Funnest Races – these aren’t races to focus on PR-ing, qualifying for a big race or anything like that. These are just to let loose and have a good time.
While there is definitely running involved in this 5k, it’s really just from obstacle to obstacle – they have trampolines, tight ropes, tarzan rope swings and THE WORLD’S LARGEST INFLATABLE SLIDE. Seriously, it’s like a playground for runners.
Remember how AWESOME water fights were when you were a kid? Well, dust off those old Super-Soakers and get ready for a water fight of epic proportions. Run Drenched is a 5K that combines running with water guns, Slip-and-Slides, water balloons and anything else you can think of that will drench you from head to toe. No one makes it to the finish line dry (but ladies – remember to wear a sports bra. This isn’t Spring Break in Cancun).
Known as “the Happiest 5k on the planet”, runners (wearing all white) are hit with different colored powders at every kilometer, ending with a “color festival” at the finish line with every color of the rainbow being tossed in the air. By the time you are done, you will look like a bag of Skittles.
What do you get when you cross a rave and a 5k? Why, the Electric Run, of course! Slap on some glow in the dark face paint and cue up your Skrillex playlist as you run through the streets. There are 5-10 “light experiences” as well as DJs stationed along the course to keep the party vibe going.
The zombie apocalypse is pretty much inevitable at this point, so might as well prepare yourself. Run For Your Lives is a combination of running, obstacles and flag football as zombies chase you around the course trying to steal your flags. SERIOUSLY PEOPLE, YOU GET CHASED BY ZOMBIES. I don’t know how you can get much more fun than that.
