After a 6am wakeup call, a fruit bar with almond butter and some coffee, Deanna and I headed to Newbury Park (side note: we’ve been listening to the Family Guy version of Ke$ha’s “Timber” and it gets scarily stuck in one’s head, which is what we were doing before the beginning of the video below)
We parked at a town center about a mile from the start, picked up our shirts, bibs and timing chips and put the rest of our stuff back in Deanna’s car (I swear XTERRA has the best race shirts, I’m wearing mine now actually):
The line for the shuttle was EPICALLY shorter than it was at Spartan Race in 2012…ask us about that story sometime! The buses were quick; only about 10 minutes apart.
The XTERRA Boney Mountain Trail Run consisted of a 21k (half marathon) and a 6k (3.7 miles). Given that since the marathon we’ve been in rest mode, we opted for the 6k which started at 8:30am.
We were excited to arrive to REAL BATHROOMS, music, great sponsor booths, coffee, water and Gatorade all before the race even began. We took care of all our pre-race duties: peed, dropped our sweatshirts at the bag check, took some very important selfies and listened to the course description (also in our video below).
Pros of the XTERRA Boney Mountain Trail Run:
- Easy course access via shuttles
- Small and intimate race
- Great race shirts
- Hospitable, offering breakfast burritos, fruit and coffee post-race
- Very attractive race announcer
Cons of the XTERRA Boney Mountain Trail Run:
- The course was pretty polar; either it was downhill or uphill, not a whole lot of flat course
- While the burnt trees looked cool, the landscape wasn’t quite as “green” as I was hoping for
Overall, not too many bad things to say about the race! You’ll definitely find me at some more XTERRA events this year. Here are their upcoming SoCal events:
